Crack sealing is a repair process that remedies the first level of asphalt distresses. Active cracks that have a width of less than ¾ of an inch, showing little surface deterioration that is not too deep without undergoing frequent pavement movements, are the ones repaired by crack sealing.
Since crack sealing treats small cracks that are in the early stages of formation, they can easily be fixed using a hot sealant, which is an adhesive material that quickly hardens as it cools. Applying a sealant on the cracks prevents water intrusion. It is also a flexible, material ideal for surfaces that undergo frequent expansion and contraction due to extreme shifts in temperatures.
